Griffins win MCC Title in Classic Battle with SLUH
The Griffins played one for the ages on Friday night as they took on the #5 team in the state in the form of the Jr. Bills fron SLUH. The Griffins fought off an onsides kick to start the game and stuffed the Bills for a three and out. They then took the next possession and drove 80 yards in seven minutes to take a lead they would never lose.
Up 14-7 with 1:32 left in the first half, the Griffins drove 5 yards to take a 21-7 lead with :18 left in the half. As SLUH simply tried to run out the clock, Stephan Simmons broke free and scrambled 65 yards to score as time expired in the half and a stunned crowd saw the Griffs hard earned scores negated in a heartbeat. The second half would see the Jr. Bills try to pound the ball at the Griffins. They fed the ball to Simmons as quarterback Paul Chaney, couldn't answer the second half bell. Simmons was up to the task, rallying the Bills to tie the score at 21 late in the third quarter. The teams traded possessions, with the Griffins moving deep into SLUH territory for the second time on the night, yet scoring no points. As the clock became a factor, the Griffs took the ball with 4:30 left in the game and drove 65 yards to score the go ahead TD. The drive took only 1:30 seconds however, and the Bills had time and the timeouts necessary to tie the score. The Griffin defense held fast, setting up a 4th and 12 at the Vianney 48 with just over a minute remaining. Chris Desamero would be the hero as he intercepted the Bills 4th down effort and sealed the MCC Crown for the Griffins.
Lindbergh Falls to Griffins 23-19
Vianney moved to 8-1 on the season with a win over the Lindbergh Flyers on Senior Night at Lindbergh. The Griffs raced off to a 9-0 lead at halftime, having squandered two scoring opportunities early in the game. The Flyers wouldn't quit however, and cut the score to 9-6. From that point, Lindbergh would match every Vianey score but the Griffs would never trail as they controlled both sides of the ball enroute to the Lindbergh Blvd Championship.

NIGHTMARE FIRST HALF DOOMS GRIFFINS IN DISTRICT OPENER vs KIRKWOOD
What started out as the game of the year in St. Louis quickly turned into mess for the Griffins as the Pioneers from Kirkwood turned several Vianney mistakes into quick scores and ran away with a 47-12 victory over the previously undefeated Griffs. The Griffins had some

opportunities early: a dropped pass in the endzone, an interception for a TD dropped, that could have kept the game close but the opportunities were never really realized and the word for the night was disappointment. After a round 1 loss in districts, the Griffins will try to regain their swagger vs a Lindbergh Flyer team that gave SLUH all it could handle before losing 13-7. The Flyers and Griffins will battle on Lindbergh's Senior Night at 7:00.

38-7 HOMECOMING WIN OVER BORGIA LAUNCHES THE GRIFFINS INTO DISTRICT COMPETITION
The Homecoming crowd had been entertained by the soccer victory and the groundbreaking ceremony prior to the start of the football game with Borgia, but the Griffins gave the crowd something to get excited about. The Griffs raced off to a 14-0 first quarter lead and never allowed the Knights a chance to score offensively. The second quarter saw a number of mistakes that kept the Knights in the game. The second half was another story as the
Griffins dominated in all three phases of the game, scoring through the air and on the ground, blocking a punt and playing smothering defense as well. Darreon Peal broke off a spectacular 60 yard run for a TD in the first quarter and Zack Franke matched the distance with a pass reception from Steve Callanan for a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead. Callanan would finish with 177 yards passing and 149 yards rushing. Defensively, Greg Hendrian stole the show with eye popping tackles from sideline to sideline. Clayton Suter and Jake Beckerle were tough in the middle combining for 16 tackles. Ryan Ploesser had another outstanding game from the defensive end spot.

GRIFFINS MOVE TO 6-0 AFTER 20-0 DEFEAT OF ROOSEVELT
Ted Grimes took the reigns as the Griffin QB in the absence of Steve Callanan and ran his way to an outstanding performance in his debut with 31 rushes for 168 yards and a touchdown and was 12-16 for 149 yards passing. Ted was just a part of a total team effort. The offensive line was dominant in grinding out over 250 yards rushing and controlling the pass rush. Dominic Vitale had 76 yards on 15 carries and Tim Windhorst had 7 receptions
for 107 yards including one of his signature "circus catches". Defensively, the Griffins thwarted 5 Roosevelt attempts in the red zone without allowing a point.Ryan Ploesser had another standout game on the defensive line as he harrassed the 'rider QB and made tackles from sideline to sideline. Credit the Defense for keeping the team in the game after Roosevelt's first two possessions started at our 18 and 20 yard lines. David Kramer had another strong effort, picking off a pass and causing havoc on the perimeter. The secondary batted down numerous Curtis Brown passes and Tim Windhorst also had a pick. Brian Boehmer was tough up front as were Bruce Beal and Jake Crews.

OVERTIME WIN OVER CBC THRILLS SELL-OUT CROWD AT DON HEEB FIELD
Week five of the season saw a number of top ten teams in all classes suffer upsets. The Griffins were able to avoid that fate with a nail biting 29-22 overtime win over the Cadets from CBC. The Griffins were tested early after a 56 yard pass on the first play set up the boys for an early score. A penalty and failed fake field goal was a momentum builder for the Cadets and they took a 3-0
advantage early. The Griffs responded with an 80 yard TD drive to claim the lead. After a Griffin turnover late in the half, the Cadets scored to take a 10-7 lead into the locker room. The Grifffins trailed at half for the first time all season. It would take a rally to win against the always tough Cadets and the boys had enough to answer. The offense took the halftime kickoff and mounted another 80 yard scoring drive to take the lead, 14-10. The Griffs extended the lead to 22-10 on a Steve Callanan TD run followed by what would be a critical 2 point conversion. With only 4:56 left in the game, the Griffins seemed well on their way to a 3-0 MCC record, but a series of "unfortunate events" would provide the sell out crow all the excitement they could handle. CBC attempted a desparation 3rd and long pass from the 50 yard line that Chris Desamero intercepted in what looked to be the endzone. The linesman however, spotted the ball at the Griffins' own one inch line. In the only spot on the field still wet from rain, the Griffs misstepped and gave CBC a safety. The Cadets retruned the ensuing free kick deep into Griffin territory but the defense appeared to hold. A third and long pass from the Cadets fell to the ground harmlessly, giving the crowd reason to celebrate, but a late pass interference call gave the Cadets new life at the Griff 10. The Cadets scored and cut the lead to 22-19. The CBC defense held tough and a short Griffin punt gave them the ball inside the Griffs 40. Two complete passes set the stage for a 32 yard field goal to tie the game as time expired and the Cadets had earned a chance to win in overtime. CBC won the overtime toss and elected to play defense first. The Griffins were up to the challenge. A six yard run by Greg Hendrian set the table for a 19 yard catch and stretch by Zack Franke for his second TD of the game. It was now up to the defense to keep the Cadets out of the endzone. Faced with a 4th and one from the 16, the D stuffed the Cadets and sealed a dramatic come from behind win.

THE GRIFFINS WIN HUGE MCC CONTEST 51-27
The Vianney v DeSmet rivalry just took on a little more importance on Friday night. Both teams entered the game at 3-0 and tied atop the MCC. The Spartans brought a lofty #4 state ranking and two players headed to Notre Dame on scholarship. The Griffins brought something of their own however, as they turned a 13-13 first quarter tie into a 41-13 halftime lead and a 51-27 blowout! The Griffs won all three phases of the game. The offense was
running on all eight cylinders despite Quarterback Steve Callanan playing on an injured ankle all night long. Steve threw for 333 yards and a record six touchdowns. Tim Windhorst was on the receiving end of four of those scores as he extended his touchdown total to eleven. The offensive line was cool under pressure as DeSmet brought the blitz often. Tim Sinak had a big blocked punt in the second half to help seal an outstanding effort by the defense.

THE GRIFFINS STOP THE INDIANS 35-14
Vianney and Jackson renewed what is becoming a serious intrastate rivalry on Friday night and the Griffins came away with a big win on Jackson's home turf, 35-14. The Griffs got off to a fast start with a Darreon Peal kickoff return to the Jackson 40. Five plays later, the Griffs were up 6-0 and never looked back. A 13-0 half time lead is never safe in Jackson, and after Steve Callanan threw his first interception of the season (while being hit on the
throw), the Indians moved 30 yards to cut the lead to 13-7. That was as close as the Indians would get as the offense found a rythm and ran off 21 unanswered points to put the game out of reach by the fourth quarter. Steve Callanan had another big day, setting a school record for completions in a game with 20 and Tim Windhorst pulled in two more touchdowns. The defense bottled up Jackson tailback Joel Pernod, holding him to under 50 yards rushing. Pernod had 190 yards last week in a winning effort against future Griffin foe, Roosevelt. David Kramer had his best game of the year wit five tackles, 4 assists, a fumble recovery, and an interception for a touchdown! Greg Hendrian had a big night with six tackles and 4 assists. The Griffins will get a big test against DeSmet at home this Friday night.
SPECIAL INTEREST ITEMS:

DeSmet and CBC had a back and forth battle before the Spartans pulled out a 37-26 win.
GRIFFINS DROP CHAMINADE 12 - 10 IN NAILBITER
For the eighth time in the last ten years, the battle for Marianist gridiorn supremacy was decided by less than ten points. This year's battle was another classic as the Griffins used stingy defense to hold the Flyers to ten points and earn a hard fought win 12-10. After running off 55 points the previous week, the Griffin offense repeatedly squandered opportunities and left it to the defense to keep the door open for a victory. Trailing 10-6 at halftime, the
Griffins controlled play in the second half and rallied to score the game winner in the third quarter. From there, the defense dominated and brought home the W for the second time in two starts. Despite a 166 yard passing effort for two touchdowns, the Griffin offense never really found its form and struggled to move the ball on the ground. Penalties negated over 100 yards of offense and cancelled out multiple first downs as the Griffins moved into the Chaminade red zone 4 times without scoring a point. The Callanan to Windhorst connection was strong again, counting two more touchdown passes. Zack Franke had a career high 5 receptions in the game. Defensively, Tim Windhorst was the hammer. Tim broke up two key passes and had another two "big hits" as he patrolled the secondary. Ryan Ploesser dominated the defensive line with seven solo tackles, three assists, a fumble recovery, and an interception - a monster game! Greg Hendrian made his presence felt with four tackles and two assists. Improved tackling has been the mark of the last two games as the Griffin D improved this week.
SPECIAL INTEREST ITEMS:
All of our remaining MCC foes won this weekend. CBC 35 - Mehlville 25. SLUH 40 - Althoff 35 and DeSmet 49 - Beaumont 13.

THE GRIFFFINS HAND ROTC A 55-6 LOSS IN THE SEASON OPENER
The opener at Don Heeb Field was a thrill packed event as the Griffins scored on offense, defense, and special teams enroute to a season opening win. The Griffins achieved seven of their eight game day goals as they got everyone into the game. Noteworthy performances were turned in by Steve Callanan with 404 total yards and a hand in five touchdowns. The yardage total is a record for Griffin quarterbacks.

Tim Windhorst had six receptions (three touchdowns) for 226 yards and performed well defensively. Brian Boemer delivered a crushing block on a Darreon Peal touchdown and did an excellent job in pass protection. Tony Scotino started the game at center, defying the doctors odds with his recovery from a spring rotator cuff injury. Ted Grimes' quarterbacking debut resulted in a 60 yard run to the ROTC five yard line. Defensively, Greg Hendrian was in his usual attack mode all game long and Chris Desamero came away with a big interception. Brendan Kane scooped and scored on a 30 yard fumble recovery and the Griffs held the Commanders to 8 yards passing. Peal had three special teams tackles and Desamero delivered a special teams K.O. with a spectacular punt return for a touchdown.
