Chess Team Rolls Through State

Vianney State Chess

The Vianney Varsity and Freshman chess teams captured titles at the Gateway Chess Championships, held last weekend at Battle High School in Columbia, MO. More than 25 high school chess team competed in the event.

Vianney’s Varsity Chess team is the defending National Chess Champion. It won the national title last year in April at the National Chess tournament in Nashville, TN. The team looks to defend its title at this year’s national event, to be held in April in San Diego. The last time Vianney won at the state level was in 2006, according to Vianney Chess Coach Ed Baur.

The varsity chess team won 13 of a possible 16 games to win the Missouri title.

Vianney’s Chess team, which has won 13 Missouri titles, is coached by Baur and Mr. David Petersen. The varsity team was led by Nick Kreitner, Alex Foley, Jack Lyons, Andrew Krekeler, and Nikita Thompson. Both Krekeler and Thompson went 4-0.

Other members of the varsity team are: Alex Moellering, John Brennan, Alex Griffin, Matt Woolbright, Aaron Reynolds, Adam Hark, Dan Owensby and Nathan Mittenzwey.

On Tuesday, the Varsity Chess team defeated Parkway North 22-8. Lyons, Thompson, Krekeler and Mittenzwey scored for the Griffins in the win.

The freshman team captured the Grade 9 and Under division title, tying with St. Joseph’s Academy for top honors among the freshmen. Both Vianney and St. Joe’s finished with 16.5 of a possible 24 points.

Members of the freshman team are: Gage Kramer, Marshall Harney, Jacob Farrell, Connor Grzovic, Sam Nelson, Matt LaFentres, Tony Allen and Joe Raidt.
