Meet Jillian Hoge

Faculty Profile

It didn’t take English teacher Jillian Hoge to make her mark on Vianney and her students.

Jillian is in her third year at Vianney. She was recently honored by the Kirkwood Rotary as Vianney’s Kirkwood Rotary Teacher of the Year.

Class with Ms. Hoge is an adventure - literally. She has her students write their own stories and pushes them to expand their creative capacity.

“Jillian is an exceptional teacher,” says Kevin Walsh, Vianney principal. “Her classroom comes alive due to her creativity and her willingness to try new things.  Whether it is acting out a scene from Romeo and Juliet, helping students create a unique project during Genius Hour, or helping students write a ‘choose your own ending’ book, Jillian makes literature and grammar come alive for our students.”

And when you say MIZ, Ms. Hoge will probably answer with a hearty ZOU, as she is a proud graduate of the University of Missouri. She holds an MAT from Webster University. Her academic degrees are a BA in Political Science and a Minor in English. Her MAT is in Secondary Education with Emphasis in English. She attended Nerinx Hall as well.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOU BUT DON’T?

I love sports! I grew up watching sports with my dad nightly, especially basketball, football, and baseball. This developed into me being a bit of a fanatic. You can usually find us attending a Cardinals game, Billiken basketball game, or any Vianney sport, especially those that I coach.

WHAT IS THE MOST DARING THING YOU’VE EVER DONE?

The most daring thing I’ve ever done is apply for a job at an all-boys, Marianist high school. I thought I would end up at a large public school or at my alma mater, Nerinx Hall. Vianney was the first place I applied, and I thought I was lucky enough to get an interview- let alone a job offer!

WHO IN HISTORY FASCINATES YOU AND WHY?

I don’t know if I could pick one person in history, but I look up to strong women who fought for their beliefs and rights against societal norms in various time periods. They broke glass ceilings so that women after them could vote, have a right to education, be leaders of companies, etc.

WHAT MOVIE OR BOOK HAS BEEN INSPIRATIONAL TO YOU?

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Time Traveler’s Wife

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

If I could travel anywhere, it would be to a Summer Olympics! I would love to go watch swimming, gymnastics, and indoor/beach volleyball.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME AWAY FROM THE CLASSROOM?

You can usually find me coaching or playing volleyball, cheering on the Griffins in their various hobbies, or attending different sports games. I’m always reading novels - usually suspenseful ones! I’m also a bit of a Netflix binge-watcher.

WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING YOU’VE EVER EATEN?

I am not a picky eater, so I would eat anything!
