Football wins district championship

The Vianney Golden Griffins are district champions once again.

Coach Paul Day's squad defeated Jackson, 71-50, in the Class 5 District 1 championship game on Friday night at Don Heeb Field behind a strong, all-around team effort led by Kyren Williams and Tionne Harris.

Williams and Harris each accounted for five touchdowns. Williams, a junior running back, scored four touchdowns on the ground and threw a touchdown pass. Harris, a senior quarterback, ran for three scores and threw two touchdown passes -- both to junior wide receiver Fahreed Cheeks.

Vianney led 14-0 after one quarter, 49-28 at halftime and 71-43 after three quarters.

The reigning Missouri Class 5 champions Golden Griffins (10-1) advance to face Pattonville (7-3) in the Class 5 quarterfinals on Friday at Don Heeb Field. Pattonville defeated Hazelwood East 48-0 on Friday to win the District 2 title.
