The Vianney soccer team is headed back to the state semifinals for the first time since 2010.
The Golden Griffins defeated host Francis Howell 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in a Class 4 quarterfinal playoff game, earning a spot in next weekend's semifinals.
Kamou Harris and Steven Bibas scored in the first half as the Griffins took a 2-1 lead at halftime and then Tommy Geders added an insurance goal with 38 seconds remaining to secure the victory. Noah Hartenstein had another strong game in goal.
Vianney (22-7-2), which has won six straight games, will face Springfield Kickapoo (14-13) in a Class 4 semifinal game at 6 p.m. Friday at Soccer Park. The winner advances to the championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
