The Vianney Golden Griffins soccer squad couldn't overcome a two-goal deficit despite a furious late rally and lost to Rockhurst, 3-2, in the Missouri Class 4 championship game on Saturday at Soccer Park.
The Griffins, who got goals from Kamou Harris and Jacob Sansone, won seven consecutive games to advance to the championship game for the first time since 2010 — when they lost to Rockhurst in the Class 3 title contest.
Vianney was seeking its first state championship since 1992, but couldn't complete the comeback on Saturday.
Rockhurst, which claimed its seventh state title, scored early in the first half and then early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead. The Griffins got a goal from Harris, assisted by Steven Bibas, at the 67:04 mark to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Rockhurst added a penalty-kick goal at 78:25 to push its advantage back to two goals.
Sansone added a goal with 53 seconds remaining to make it 3-2, but the Griffins weren't able to tie the game in the final seconds.
