Vianney offers a variety of college credit and honors-level courses beginning freshman year. Colleges and universities base their acceptance of students on both the type of courses that a student takes and their performance in these high school courses. Historically, up to 99% of Vianney
graduates go to college.
Therefore, the curriculum of St. John Vianney High School is designed to prepare each student for a positive college experience. Each of the Honors, Advanced Placement, Advanced College Credit and Dual Enrollment offerings carry an additional .5 GPA. [Example] A student that earns an A in AP Calculus will earn a 4.5 (versus a 4.0) for the course. Vianney offers over 40 Honors, AP and ACC options.
Honors Courses
Students that have demonstrated high achievement in a given subject area may be placed in an honors course. These courses are taught with an emphasis on increased breadth and depth of material. Honors level courses are available in most content areas, and the intensity of these courses should be carefully considered by students and parents with guidance from their counselor and/or the Assistant Principal of Academics.
Advanced College Credit (ACC) Courses
These courses are taught by highly trained Vianney faculty in affiliation with various accredited universities. The course rigor and student expectations are designed to be comparable to those placed on students enrolled in the same course on university campuses. ACC courses are dual credit, which means that students will earn high school credit along with college credit through the respective university for an additional registration fee paid to the university at the beginning of the course. The college credit earned in the course is generally transferable to other universities that the student will attend after graduation from St. John Vianney High School.
Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
AP courses are open to Juniors, Seniors, and some Sophomores and Freshmen. These courses meet the guidelines and course expectations of the College Board, and are designed to be the equivalent of college courses. Students in these courses are expected to take the AP exam in May
of each year. Many universities accept a score of 3 or higher as credit.
AP/ACC Courses
Some AP courses are also designated as Advanced College Credit (ACC) courses. This dual designation allows students the opportunity to take the AP exam and also receive credit through the respective university for the course, ultimately creating two pathways to potentially earn college
credit.
Dual Enrollment: St. Louis Community College
In addition to the opportunities to earn college credit through the ACC and AP course offerings, Juniors and Seniors at St. John Vianney High School may take a course at one of the St. Louis Community College campuses outside of the regular school day in a subject that is not offered in
the current curriculum. These students have the option of taking this course in place of an elective, or as a ninth credit during their Senior year. The course selected must be approved by the student's counselor and the Assistant Principal of Academics.
