Qualified Charitable Distributions (IRA Charitable Rollover)
Are you eligible for a tax deduction?
By giving money you no longer need to Vianney from your IRA you can save money on taxes and help us continue teaching students in the Catholic, Marianist tradition. But you must qualify in order to make this kind of gift. Take this quick quiz, or read below to see if you are eligible.
To qualify:
- You must be 70 1/2 or older at the time of gift. (SECURE 2.0 raised the age to 73 for RMDs in 2023)
- Distributions must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA administrator to Vianney
- Gifts must be outright, meaning they go directly to Vianney. Distributions to donor-advised funds or life-income arrangements do not qualify.
Benefits:
- The QCD portion of your distribution is excluded from gross income on your IRS Form 1040.
- Potential avoidance of a higher income tax bracket
- Supporting the Men of Character and Accomplishment at Vianney!
Turning 73 in 2024?
Your first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year after which you turn 73 (SECURE 2.0 raised the age to 73 for RMDs in 2023). After that your RMDs must be taken by December 31 of each year. Failure to do so means a penalty of 50% of the required RMD. Retirees may without penalty withdraw more than the RMD.

Donor Advised Funds
A donor advised fund (DAF) is an account established at a public charity or foundation. You can transfer cash or other assets to a DAF and receive an immediate tax deduction. You can then recommend grants from the fund over time to your favorite charities such as Vianney. A DAF allows you to avoid the cost of managing a private foundation and serves as a centralized location for your charitable giving.

Corporate Matching Gifts
Many employers (such as Emerson, Anheuser-Busch, Wells Fargo, and more) sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contribution made by their employees. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest.
The impact of your gift to St. John Vianney High School may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.
