National Honor Society

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is an organization that promotes appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership and service to the school and/or community. Any student whose cumulative grade point average for the first semester of his sophomore or junior year is 3.75 or higher is eligible academically. Those who are academically eligible are then evaluated on the basis of character and leadership by their teachers, coaches and/or moderators of the year in which they become academically eligible for membership in the society.

Eligibility: Juniors & Seniors who have met the following requirements:  

There are four (4) Characteristics that will be evaluated toward entry into the Gold Circle Chapter of the Vianney National Honor Society:

  • Scholarship
  • Character
  • Leadership
  • Service 

Candidates are rated on a 4.0 scale for each of the four characteristics. 

  1. Cumulative GPA at the end of the school year of 3.75 or better. 
  2. The faculty and/or co-curricular moderators previous school year evaluate the candidates in April on an N.H.S. scale of 1.0 to 4.0 on Character and Leadership as those terms are defined in your copy of the Parent and Student Handbook. 
  3. The candidate’s scholastic cumulative average is rated on a scale of 1.0 to 4.0. The higher the cumulative average, the higher the NHS rating. Thus, a Vianney GPA of 3.75 – the minimum needed for Scholarship eligibility – becomes “3.0” on a 4.0 scale. 
  4. For service, the candidate’s participation in cocurricular activities and/or community service during the current year is also rated on an NHS scale of 1.0 to 4.0, as follows:

As a sophomore, you need a minimum of 20 hours of community service (same as you did as a freshman) through the Campus Ministry Social Service Program.  You may not use those required 20 hours for service points for membership in the National Honor Society.  Any hours above the 20 required hours performed as a sophomore, however, will be credited as service for the National Honor Society.  A junior qualifies in the same manner; 20 hours (or more), performed as a junior, over and above any required service, such as SSP.  No number of hours of service performed as a freshman may be credited for NHS service hours. 

Twenty additional hours of regular, consistent, and dependable service each year earns a 3.0 on the NHS rating scale. 

Eighty activity points earned as a sophomore will receive a 3.0 in service on the NHS rating scale of 1.0 to 4.0. 

A combination of activity points and service hours which corresponds to the values above will also be adequate to qualify for 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, provided that it includes at least 20 hours of service over and above campus ministry requirements. 

Community service hours must be documented and the sheet must be turned in to the Campus Ministry Office by the end of school in May.  Hours completed over the summer must be submitted to the Moderator of NHS by the first week of school in August. 

The average of the four ratings for: Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service must be 3.000 or higher to qualify for NHS membership.
